Dein letztes Album heißt “When I Was Young”, deine letzte Single “Nostalgia”, warum spielt die Jugend so eine große Rolle für deine Musik?

Was ist passiert?

Meinst du “Wonderful World”?

Ja genau, “Wonderful World. Don´t know much”.

Was ist Flunky-Ball? Naja egal, ich liebe Beer-Pong.

Glitzer-Brauen oder Regenbogen-Bart?

Regenbogen-Bart.

Kendrick Lamar!

MØ

Interview with MØ – “It is definitely time to release!”

We met MØ before her show at the Southside Festival and talked with her about bum bags, glitter-brows and nostalgia as a special source of inspiration.

Your latest album is called “When I Was Young”, your latest single is called “Nostalgia”, why does the youth play such a big role in your music?

My first album that came out in 2014 is about the beginning of the twenties. It is about not really knowing where you are going, about not having a direction and feeling a bit lost. Now I just finished my second album. It will come out later this year. I think “When I Was Young” and “Nostalgia” both are about me reflecting about the years that have passed. Now I am closer to thirty, you know. What has happened? I am still confused. I thought I would have figured it all out now but I haven´t. It is kind of me, looking back and trying to stick to something. I am a bit scared of the journey of life.

“Nostalgia” is a positive song about your childhood. Is nostalgia only a positive feeling for you?

For me nostalgia is a great source of inspiration. Looking back and memorising a situation or a feeling is for me a very uplifting thing. It gives you hope for the future when you think about how you felt. Of course it can be a bit sad sometimes if you don´t see some people anymore, for example. But I think nostalgia in general is inspiring.

If you had to describe your childhood in music, which song would it be?

It´s a tough question. But it´s funny because when you asked me I thought about one of the first songs I´ve ever heard. That was one of my father´s favourite songs. I didn´t really know what music was so I listened to whatever my parents listened to. That song I thought of was the one by Sam Cooke, going like: “Don´t know much about history…”

You mean “Wonderful World”?

Yes, “Wonderful World. Don´t know much”. I don´t know why but I had to think of this song.

Kakkmaddafakka, a Norwegian band you might know, wrote a song called “Young You“. Could you describe your “young you”? What has changed?

The difference is that I am much more confident now. As a kid I was struggling with many situations. Today I don´t care too much about what other people say. It is a boring answer but I am actually pretty similar to how I was when I was seven years old. It is weird, I am obviously a lot different but I feel like being the same. So I guess it is just confidence that makes the difference.

That is interesting. I think many people would answer in a different way.

Oh okay. Maybe I am just super strange.

You wear special outfits on stage; does nostalgia influence your style as well?

I don´t really know. I am performing in outfits I feel comfortable in. That is so important when you perform for so many people. I hate performing in high heels for instance. It has to be something I can move in and roll around on the floor if I wanted to. I need to feel liberated.

Let´s leave nostalgia behind, what are your plans for the future? You talked about a new album before, right?

Yes, I have done a new album. I can´t tell you the official release date but I am really excited for it to come out. My first album came out in 2014, four and a half years ago. It is definitely time to release.

Many fans will be excited to hear that.

Oh, I hope so.

Back to the festival. Let´s talk about the must-haves 2018. Flowers or feathers?

Flowers!

Bum bag or gym bag?

I actually would like to say gym bag but I am such a big follower of the bum bag. That has been my official bag for the last twenty years.

Flunky ball or beer pong?

What is flunky ball? I don’t mind. I love beer pong.

Glitter brows or rainbow beard?

Rainbow beard.

If you pack your things for a festival, what are the three most important things you mustn´t forget?

Sunscreen! I learned that sunscreen is super important, a real thing to actually worry about. The second thing is a bum bag obviously and some kind of camera.

If one act invited you spontaneously to join his stage, which act should it be?

Kendrick Lamar!
